Between a Book and a Buffalo (gilded)

Between a Book and a Buffalo (gilded)

Balancing body and mind.

A woman peruses a book while lying atop a water buffalo. She rides the beast backward, a directional opposition that underscores the sculpture’s study of conceptual opposites.

Dualism, which posits an unbreachable division between body and mind, stretches back even further than Aristotle and Plato’s famous argument, evocatively portrayed in Raphael’s The School of Athens. In Buddhist and Hindu texts that far predate the birth of Christ, the question of union or disunion between body and mind, heart and intellect, are topics of frequent and voluminous examination.
